They say that half of the fun of a vacation is the planning. I say, "poppycock". Half of the fun is thinking about the vacation and the other have is actually DOING the vacation! To me the best part of taking a tour is having most of the hard work already done for you. The logistics of planning the route, choosing the hotels, and obtaining tickets for the museums are not in my wheel-house. I'm a Medical Technologist. I do sciency things.
We looked at many types of tours and vacations. At first we thought a Mediterannean cruise would be the way to go but then we quickly realized we wouldn't have ample time to actually "see" the cities. When we looked at different tours we learned that not all tours are created alike. Rick Steves tours seemed to parallel more of the adventure we were longing for. We wanted to immerse ourselves in the cultures of the cities, not just view them from a cruise ship dock. We chose the 21 day Best of Europe tour because it seemed to be the best introduction to Europe. The tour hit many of the iconic sites we were interested in and since we didn't know when we'd be able to return, it seemed like something that would satisfy us.......for now!
My great aunt was a retired school teacher who had been on countless trips, several to Europe. As a child I admired all of the art books she picked up during her travels. I was recently blessed with receiving some of those books, specifically a Michelangelo and Uffizi Gallery book. Inside she wrote, "I hope one day you will be able to see this in person." She passed away a year before we decided to take this trip....I know she will be with us each step of the way, pointing out her favorite sculptures.
We are Kathy and Steve Romack. Empty-nesters. Not yet retired. This is our first European trip. This is our Scrapbook.
